With the holiday season upon us, people will be sending their greetings via paper and electronic greeting cards. While paper cards will consist majority of this tradition, ecards have their places. Sending ecards are much more environment friendly. It is also economical, particularly during our current financial downturn.

However, there are a few precaution that one needs to be aware of when one receives ecards.

• Make sure you recognize the sender's name. The sender's FULL name should ALWAYS be included in the subject line (and sometimes in the "from" field) of the email.
  
  
• The web site should be easily identified in one or more of the following places: the "from" field, the subject line, or in the email itself.
  
  
• Do NOT click any links with simple IP address. In a fake ecard email, the IP address may be hidden and can only be seen by hovering your cursor over the link or right clicking on the link to view properties. The link should not be a series of number (e.g. 169.180.1.15, commonly referred to as an IP address).
  
  
• An ecard email should NOT have any attachment of any kind. The recipient will go to the web site to "pick up" (i.e. view) the ecard.
  
  
• Legitimate ecard emails will always include an option to pick up the ecard by typing the web site address and enter a code.
  
  
• Use a webmail or email application that has good spam filter. My experience with Gmail has been very good. It filters out almost all spam mail.

I love vintage greetings cards and Halloween cards are perhaps my favorite of all because unlike the gory cards that are more common now, vintage Halloween cards have a certain innocence to them. Despite this, lots of people used to send them to ward of any bad luck and wish for a bright future for the person on the receiving end. After all, you never know, maybe there is such a thing as ghosts ...

We have added a new card to our collection titled "Sweet Peas" which is suitable for a wide range of occasions.

The card was conceived during a lazy afternoon on my vacation in Denmark this summer. The abundant and colorful display of sweet peas in my grandmother's garden provided endless subjects for my watercolor practice using a new technique.

Even though the sweet pea season is ending, early autumn is in fact the best time to prepare your seeds for next summer's blooms. So send this card to extend the days of summer a little bit more or as a little reminder to all your friends who love flowers to plant their sweet pea seeds now.

The card includes instructions for planting your own seeds and a little bit of information about the painting technique I used to paint the flowers. Both can be viewed at the end of the card by clicking on the buttons called "Plant Sweet Peas" and "About the Art Work".

Just in time for Mother's Day, we have added another card to our selection called "Under the Moon".

The card features moon bear cubs "Bingo" & "Happy", born in captivity at Taiwan's Low Altitude Research Station where their mother was brought after being found injured in the wild. My friends at the Station asked if I could animate the cubs based on the footage they had made since the birth of the cubs; this card is the result of this collaboration.

It is difficult to convey the breathtaking beauty of the forest and mountains where these bears live, so I had to challenge myself artistically to create an inspired backdrop. Let me know what you think!

2 New Cards for April

We have added two more cards to our site.

"Pigeongram" is a general card suitable for almost any occasion when sending a message via virtual carrier pigeon will add a special touch. I have rendered much of the card by hand in watercolor to add to the vintage feel that I tried to capture.

The second card, "Roof of the World" is somewhat unusual in that it was inspired by the events taking place around the world and in Tibet. I was honored when prominent Tibetan singer songwriter Techung agreed to provide the music used in the card, a very beautiful piece of his song to the Mountains, Kham Lu. You can find more information about Techung by clicking on the included links in the card.

The card is a celebration of diversity and peace for all of our global family. This card is free and is available for non-members to send. Thus, you will not be prompted to log in before sending the card. For our existing members, we recommend that you log in first to send this card if you want it to appear in your card history.

Unlike our other cards, this card will be the only card made available to a number of organizations for free distribution for the cause of peace. If you know of any organization that would like to use the card for this purpose, please let us know.

I am sure quite a few of us are trying to remember when Easter last was this early, but unless you are 95 years or older you would not have be en born yet - I will save you the math, that makes it 1913 when it last happened. And it won't happen again until 2160!

For anyone interested in the mysteries of how the date of Easter is calculated, the brief explanation is that it moves around on the calendar in order to preserve the season and phase of the moon at the time of the resurrection. Easter Sunday is the first full moon of the spring or vernal equinox, but since astronomical observations vary by the location of the observer on the planet, tables are a more practical way of calculating the date of Easter. "Gifts of Spring" is just in time for Easter and it can also be used to send a spring greeting. Easter and Spring are of course both essentially about rebirth; the gifts that nature bestows upon us are captured in this card featuring plenty of flowers, a fawn and a pheasant chick.

The second card, "Surprise" features an American Staffy who definitely manages to have his cake and eat it too! Set to a piece of Bossa Nova, a Brazilian style that blends samba and jazz, which seems quite appropriate as "bossa" means doing something with particular charm and natural flair.

As the year draws to a close we want to thank you for your support and many encouraging comments. Some of the mails we received have been profoundly touching, others immensely helpful in their constructive criticism, and either way we want to encourage you to keep sending them!

In the past few weeks we have added three more cards for the holiday season. The latest addition, "Juletide", seeks to capture some of the season's spirit in my own country, Denmark. It is inspired by one of my favorite Swedish watercolor painters, Carl Larsson. He painted his homelife in the picturesque countryside and his images very much conjure up the idyllic feeling of family, nature and of course Scandinavia. Most of the card is rendered by hand in watercolor to capture his unique style. The card is well suited for any kind of seasonal as well as secular greeting, including New Year, and features a pair of cats and a pair of mice.

The second card puts a new twist on the ballet choreographed to Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite. This card also features many hand rendered watercolor elements and was difficult and time consuming to animate as the ballerina absolutely had to dance gracefully in proper ballet moves!

If you are thinking to buy those hip square greeting cards for this holiday season, you may want to think again, according to newsobserver.com.

A rectangular envelope, 5 1/2 by 8 1/2, gets the usual 41-cent first-class stamp. But one of those trendy square 6 1/2-inch greeting cards will cost you 58 cents. If your list is long, it adds up.

Carl A. Walton, a spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service, said that would be any envelope that's 11 1/2 inches long and 6 1/8 inches high -- or smaller, as long as it's not square. Anything outside of those dimensions could be considered "nonmachinable" and charged extra postage.

That is a lot of tree cut down for the cards, not to mention all other related activities (turning trees into paper cards, delivering cards to stores, buying the cards, mailing the cards, etc.). The best way to save the environment is to reduce consumption.

New feature to distinguish Ojolie ecards from fake ecard scams

The article Has the E-Card Scam Storm Blown Over? describes the situation of the recent fake ecard scams.

Greeting card scams became so rampant at the start of the summer that the FBI issued a public warning about the practice.

"If you get an e-mail claiming you've received an e-card from a generic 'friend' or 'family member' rather than from someone whose name or personal e-mail address you recognize, the e-mail is fraudulent and should be immediately deleted," John Hambrick, unit chief of the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center said in a statement issued July 25. "Do not follow any of the instructions in the e-mail or click on any link."

The statement explained that fraudulent e-mails claiming to contain an electronic greeting card from an unnamed individual, such as a "friend" or "classmate," were flooding e-mail boxes everywhere.

These "phishing" e-mails, it continued, which falsely claim to be from legitimate greeting card companies, instruct consumers to click on a link in the e-mail message to view their e-card. Clicking on the link can potentially introduce a virus into a consumer's computer.

According to the article, the situation has improved.

As the summer ended, though, scammers moved on to other things, Cluley, of Sophos, maintained. "Recently, they've been offering things like links to the latest Beyonce video or links to free computer games," he said.

However, the public in general may still be suspicious of any ecard email. That is why we have added a new feature in our site to distinguish Ojolie ecard emails from fake ones.

In addition to the existing feature that includes the sender's full name in the ecard email subject, e.g. "Frederikke Tu has sent you an ecard from Ojolie.com", we have added an optional email subject field and an optional email message field in the "send card" page. You can add a personal email subject and message that will be included in the ecard pickup notification email sent to the recipients. It will personalize and distinguish your email from the recent fake ecard email scams and increase the chance that your ecard will be viewed by the recipients.

Instead of the typical email subject, your personal email subject will be used instead, with your personal email message included inside the email.

How To Protect Yourself Against Bad Ecards

Be extra suspicious if (a) the greeting card doesn't address you by name; (b) the card sender's name isn't included in the body of the email or the name isn't familiar; and (c) it's not a holiday, a birthday, or any other occasion that might warrant a card. If the card requires that you install a special viewer or tries to download a file to your system, treat it like a trojan. Cancel the download and scan your system with up to date antivirus software.

Be extra vigilant. If you receive a card from someone you know but you aren't quite sure it's legit, compose a new email to that person and ask if they sent you a card. Don't reply using the email you received - the From address just might be bogus.

In addition, you should always install anti-virus and/or anti-spyware softwares. When you are brought to the "bad" websites that try to install malwares/spywares to your computer, the security softwares will stop them.

The main thing that is different from the paid version is that when you schedule a periodic scan of your system, the software scans your whole computer. You are not able to specify the drives or directories that you want to include or exclude. But for most people this is not really a problem.

birthday. She made her disapproval quite clear.

Are men afraid of greeting cards?

According to Lisa Earle McLeod of www.forgetperfect.com in her Greeting card paralysis reaches all time high, the answer is a definitely yes!

It's no coincidence that as the more verbose half of the species, women buy and send more cards than men do. According to Hallmark's research, 82 percent of all greeting cards are purchased by women.
